Calculated fields can be set to editable. This allows a value to be calculated using the provided formula when the form is saved, and then for users to either accept the resulting value or edit it manually if they wish. 

The setting to allow this is under "Calculated field settings" and is named "Allow editing of calculated field result".

Editable calculated fields are only available for calculated fields where the underlying database value begins with "TextField".
